Artificial family selection based on growth rate in cultivated lines of Litopenaeus vannamei (Decapoda, Penaeidae) from Venezuela Genet. Mol. Biol.
De Donato,Marcos; Ramirez,Raúl; Howell,Chris; Verginelli,Roberto; Orta,Tomás; Cabrera,Saúl; Mata,Enrique; Manrique,Ramón.
We investigated the effects of family selection on the growth rates of four genetic lines of Litopenaeus vannamei, the Pacific white shrimp, from Venezuela. The mean family weight at selection was 16.79 g and the mean growth rate was 0.169 g d-1 at a mean age of 138 days. The mean growth rates per generation were 0.141 g d-1 for the parental generation (P0), 0.173 g d-1 for the F1 and 0.191 g d-1 for the F2. Survival varied from 83.3% to 94.4%. There were statistically significant differences between lines, with lines B and C, growing at higher temperatures and lower salinities, showing the fastest growth. Regression analysis between growth rate and age for each genetic line showed high r² values, but smaller than those shown between growth rate and...

Breeding full-sib families of sugar cane using selection index Ciência Rural
Almeida,Livia Marcon; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do; Carneiro Júnior,Josil de Barros.
An experiment with families belonging to the first selection stage (T1) of the Sugar Cane Breeding Program (PMGCA) of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ)/RIDESA was carried out in the Plant Disa, located in the municipality of Conceição da Barra-ES, in 2006, aiming to evaluate families, for the selection of superior plants for the later stages of the breeding program of the culture. Sixty-eight full-sib families and three genotypes considered standards with potential recommendation for the area under study were evaluated. The experiment was arranged in a statistical randomized block design, in which the families were grouped into four sets. Each set had four replicates and one hundred seedlings per plot, with spacing of 0.5 meters...

Early selection in sugarcane family trials via BLUP and BLUPIS procedures - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i4.16430 Agronomy

The objective of this study was to compare early selection in sugarcane families through the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and simulated individual best linear unbiased prediction (BLUPIS) procedures. We tested 80 full-sib families in an incomplete block experimental design. Statistical analyses were performed using the mixed model methodology. The following traits were determined from the first rattoon: tons of stalks per hectare (TSH), percentage of soluble solids w/w in the juice (Brix), and tons of brix per hectare (TBH). Variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood (REML), and the genotypic values of the families were predicted by BLUP and BLUPIS. The BLUPIS procedure suggested the selection of 30 families with a total...

Evaluating sugarcane families by the method of Dynamic Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (DTOPSIS) Bragantia

Enlarging the quantity of seedlings of elite families and discarding inferior sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) families could improve sugarcane breeding and selection efficiency. The feasibility of using the method Dynamic Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (DTOPSIS) method was explored to identify superior sugarcane families. Data on 5 traits: Brix, millable stalks per stool (MS), stalk diameter (SD), plant height (PH), and percent pith were collected from two family trials having 17 families and two check cultivars at two sites including plant-cane and first-ratoon crops. The rest of the seedlings were planted into field for routine selection in the regular program. The DTOPSIS method calculates a comprehensive index (Ci) which...

Sample size for family evaluation in potato breeding programs Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Diniz,Maria Cristina Duarte Rios; Pinto,César Augusto Brasil Pereira; Lambert,Eduardo de Souza.
Clonal families from a broad genetic base population in the Potato Breeding Program at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), Brazil, were used in this trials. Twenty-five families were assessed in a 5 x 5 triple lattice design. Each plot consisted of 30 clones distributed in three rows of ten plants. Tuber yield per plant, percentage of large tubers, mean weight of large tubers, mean medium-sized tuber weight and tuber specific gravity were measured. Three hundred experiments were simulated varying the family sizes from three to 90 clones. The coefficients of experimental variation (CVe), the coefficients of genetic variation (CVg), heritabilities for family mean and the CVg/CVe ratio were estimated. Genetic parameters were stabilized with family...

Improvement of non restorer lines (B-line) of sweet sorghum was carried out at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pakchong district, Nakhonratchasima province during 2005-2009 for 10 seasons, aimed to improve their yield components by backcrossing method for 3 generations and followed by 4 generations of pedigree selection. For pedigree selection procedure, line selection was compared to family selection method. In late rainy season 2009, it was found that 40 non restorer lines of sweet sorghum were selected from the line selection method. They had 54-62 days to flowering, 136-298 cm of plant height, 12-14 leaves per plant, 18-30 cm of panicle length, 10.1-15.8 percent brix of sweetness, 17-22 mm of stem diameter, 2.0-3.0 leaf diseases score,...
